Jesus said, “I am the vine, you are the branches.” You know what that reminds me of? Groot, from Guardians of the Galaxy. Because sometimes, prayer time takes an interesting turn.
In a video game, if you delay the main quest to do all the side quests, the main quest will still be waiting for you; it has to, it’s the main plot of the game. In real life, that’s not the case. Pursuing too many side quests can distract you from the things that are most important in life.
We’re obsessed with time travel and going back to fix our mistakes. But is that a good idea? It’d lead to a more comfortable life, sure, but probably not a better one.
We’re fascinated with utopias, both in our fiction and in our daydreaming about how we want the world to be. We want a perfect world. We want progress. But if we’re not careful, we don’t know where we’re trying to progress.
With family meals, you don’t get to eat exactly what you want. Of the food that’s served, you can have more of the things you like, but these are the things for dinner. If you love mashed potatoes but hate carrots and pork, then load up on potatoes. But you’re not going to get a cheeseburger, that’s not for dinner.
If you could save and reload your life, you could do anything you want today with no lasting consequences when you reset. Would you? Even if there aren’t any external consequences, it still changes you as a person.
If I told you this brownie had dog poop in it, would you eat it? That’s disgusting. That’s what sin is like.
Ever finish a task and it rises from the dead again the next day? That’s a to-do list zombie. Even worse are to-do list hydras, where you cut off one head and another two take its place. How can you get peace of mind and defeat your to-do list zombies?
When you know the Bible better, more stands out, and you didn’t even realize you were missing anything before. Two people can approach the same exact thing (such as art or music), be fully satisfied, but appreciate it on a way deeper level. Same thing happens in heaven too.
Jesus has an Epic Quest for your life. But it’s not a story you have to do alone. In fact, He wants us to work together, He built this quest as massively multiplayer.
